Chase Matthew Fort Worth Concert reviews
The Color Purple Plus?
The play was a very good adaptation of the movie, with outstanding singing and Fantasia Barrino far surpassing my expectations of her acting ability - what a performer! I was surprised by the additional scene injecting a lesbian flavor into Celie's affection for Shug Avery, a departure from the movie. It wasn't an unwelcome addition, just surprising. However, I see this as Oprah Winfrey's desire to be inclusive. The only issue I had was the acoustics at the Fox Theater; we sat in the center balcony, in the second row, and my partner as well as those around us commented on how much of the dialogue was muffled. The songs were not clear or crisp, and the music seemed too loud, sometimes drowning out the words of the song. Despite this, the play was emotionally stirring AND delightfully funny!
